Are you trying to follow God but still holding on to doubt, fear, or your own ideas? That’s double-mindedness - and it’s more common than you think.

Understanding Double-Mindedness: Signs You’re Divided in Faith

Double-mindedness isn’t just a divided heart or mind. It’s when our beliefs are in conflict - when part of us trusts God and another part doubts, leaving us feeling unsettled and unstable.

It shows up as wanting God’s promises but secretly questioning if they really apply to you. We may pray and seek His guidance, yet our actions, thoughts, or fears pull us in a different direction.

It’s when our faith and our fear coexist, constantly competing for control. We may feel convicted by God’s truth, but old wounds, worldly pressures, or past disappointments whisper that it won’t work out.

Double-mindedness happens when we’re torn between God’s promises and our own doubts. We may want alignment and peace, but the inner tug-of-war keeps us stuck - second-guessing every decision, hesitating to act, or feeling spiritually stagnant.

Why it matters:

This inner conflict doesn’t just drain our energy; it can block clarity, stall obedience, and prevent us from fully receiving God’s promises. Every area of our life - our purpose, our relationships, our career or business, and our peace - feels the ripple effect of divided beliefs.

This is why you can feel mentally exhausted, stagnant, distracted, and unfocused.

What the Bible Says About Double-Mindedness

James 1:5 - 8 says, “ If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

This passage isn’t just about asking God for wisdom - it’s about how our inner alignment affects our ability to receive it. God is generous and wants to give us clarity, guidance, and insight. The barrier isn’t Him - it’s our own divided thinking.

Practical Steps to Overcome Double-Mindedness and Align With God

Being “double-minded” means we’re holding conflicting beliefs at the same time. Part of us trusts God’s wisdom, His timing, and His plan. Another part of us doubts, fears, or leans on our own understanding. That inner conflict makes us unstable.

In day-to-day life, it looks like:

  • You pray or ask for guidance, but then immediately question the answer or ignore it.

  • You want God’s promises, but you’re also secretly clinging to control, past hurts, or fear of failure.

  • You make decisions, but half of your mind is running a “what if” scenario that undermines your faith in action.

James says that a double-minded person is like a wave in the sea - constantly tossed. That’s a vivid picture for our life: one moment we can feel confident, the next we can feel uncertain, this can cause us to end up reactive instead of responding from a state of being grounded to our experiences and the world around us.

A powerful key to this is awareness without judgment.

Notice: Where am I wavering? Where am I believing and doubting at the same time?

This isn’t about judging yourself; it’s about observing a pattern that blocks your clarity and action.

Here’s a Simple Practice to support this:

  1. In moments of uncertainty, pause and identify the conflicting beliefs: the ones that trust God, and the ones that don’t.

  2. Name them or write them down.

  3. Bring them before God and repent for the beliefs that conflict with God’s promises.

  4. Ask God to take them away and replace them with his peace and to strengthen the useful beliefs you have that are aligned with his promises and will.

  5. Choose to act on the belief aligned with God’s truth - one small, practical step today.

This simple awareness practice supports us to become aware of the unconscious beliefs and fears we have that cause us to be in double-mindedness.  This allows us to recognize the wave before it tosses us and consciously ground ourselves in God’s wisdom and truth.
